INBOX I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed Sree Roy's interview with Anna Maria on CBC Radio Canada. I was driving home from Easter Holidays and I will say I was pleasantly surprised to hear the broadcast. Maryanne Pearson Via e-mail I just came across your recent article titled "Clients with Cancer." It was an excellent collection of information, but I was disappointed to see that we were not included. However I do understand that your focus is primarily nail technicians. I am the author of the spa industry textbook Oncology Esthetics: A Practitioner's Guide and have been teaching oncology esthetics to spa professionals since 2008 within Canada and the U.S. We are now also teaching in Australia and New Zealand. During our three-day trainings we also emphasize the use of non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, and non-irritating ingredients. The pyscho-social aspect of what a spa therapist can offer a person undergoing cancer treatment is imperative; not everyone can deal with cancer or its treatments. Anyway, thought I'd drop a line and make you aware of other offerings in the spa world. Our website is www. oncologyesthetics.com. Morag Currin Via e-mail My name is Tina Alberino. I have been published in NAILS many times. I read the magazine from cover to cover every time I get it. I've been meaning to send you an e-mail to thank you, not just for recognizing and sharing my work, but also for providing useful legal/ethical information to other techs. I write a blog called "This Ugly Beauty Business" where I provide my readers with detailed information on what is and isn't legal or acceptable in the salon. I also take reader e-mails and provide free advice and assistance to beauty workers and business owners in crisis. Recently, out of frustration, I decided to quit taking e-mails. When I started my blog, I was getting five e-mails a week. VERY PINTERESTING www.pinterest.com/nailsmagazine We are now up to 87 boards and are coming up with new ones all the time. If you would like to join in on the pinning fun, e-mail beth.livesay@ bobit.com for a group board invitation. This Autism Awareness nail art tutorial by Cheongju-si has been pinned over 4,000 times. 46 | Now, I'm getting upwards of 80 a week. To be honest, I was getting overwhelmed and responding to e-mails was becoming a full-time job — a full-time job I was not getting paid to do. When I read the article, "When a Tech Leaves Your Team" and the accompanying piece, "Who Owns the Client?" I began reconsidering my decision to abandon the readers that seek my help. I was so thrilled to see that the techs and owners interviewed (one of whom I know personally) were so wellinformed about the legality of non-compete agreements and were taking steps to protect their clientele without isolating their former technicians from the clients that so enjoy their services. This morning, literally as soon as I put the article down to make a second cup of coffee, in what must have been some random twist of fate, one of my readers sent me an e-mail condemning my decision to stop taking e-mails. In her message, she expressed her gratitude for my work on the blog and wrote, "I understand why you made your decision, but I don't agree with it at all. We need you. You are the person that we go to when our professional lives are falling apart. Please, I beg you, don't abandon us." After reading that, I realized why I had made the decision to stop accepting e-mails in the first place. My frustration stemmed from the fact that I was putting countless hours into writing articles and e-mails and not seeing much back in the form of gratitude. Many of my readers, struggling through their complicated professional issues, just weren't thanking me for the time and effort I put into helping them. I realized that I have been reading your magazine every month for years and have enjoyed it immensely, but have never once in all of those years sent you or any of the writers a simple message to convey that. So, I wanted to take time to thank you and the entire staff of NAILS for all that you do and for helping me realize that I need to continue to support our professional community. I'm sure you get plenty of thank you e-mails, but you certainly don't get as many as you deserve. | AUGUST 2013
