a Big Book survival guide Welcome to the 2013-2014 NAILS Big Book. Our annual directory and fact book is chock-full of useful information designed to help you in a variety of aspects of your job. In addition to the standard directory format, we always run a special section that we hope nail techs and salon owners will find particularly useful. This year, we've put together the comprehensive Nail Tech Survival Guide. Survival Guide, you ask? Sure, you might not need to know how to survive if you're lost in the woods and you come upon a bear, but we're pretty sure you'd like to know how to survive a salon inspection, a trade show, or even a difficult client. To go along with this year's survival theme, here's my advice on how you can survive the Big Book itself. on my mind 1. Marketers, Consultants, and Associations Directories (oh my!): There are three comprehensive directories in this issue with updated contact info and basic descriptions for each listing. Thinking about carrying a new line of gel-polish? We've got all of your favorite professional manufacturers listed in the Marketers Directory (p. 130). Want to figure out who can help you with a social media strategy? We've got a list of marketing and PR gurus in the Consultants Directory (p. 163). Looking for help lobbying your state board to pass stricter regulations? We've got the major groups in the beauty industry listed in the Associations Directory (p. 156). You can also go online anytime to directory.nailsmag.com for even more listings and further information on all the companies that are in the Big Book. 2. State Board Directory (p. 24): Each year we contact all of the state boards to see if they have any changes in their regulations and requirements pertaining to nail technicians. In addition to their contact info, we also include licensing regulations, continuing education information and requirements, reciprocity restrictions, and whether mobile and home salons are legal in your state. We have everything covered to help you survive if you're moving to a new state or just want to refresh yourself on the rules and regulations of your current state. 3. Salon Safety Guidelines (p. 73): Want to survive your next salon inspection? Make sure you're following the standard protocol for disinfection and sanitation in your salon. We keep the most updated information on basic salon sanitation, product safety, and pedicure equipment disinfection in one place so you have it for quick reference. There are also plenty of links to online resources we have available at the click of a mouse. 4. Industry Stats (p. 43): Want a glimpse into the health of our industry? Thinking about opening a new salon? Our exclusive research gives you a closer look at the nail industry to help you survive the process of putting together a business plan. We present nail tech (and client) demographic information, along with industry price averages, buying habits, and other business-building data. Most importantly, we project the size of the nail market so you can see how our industry is doing compared to previous years. (Hint: It's doing pretty well!) 5. Nail Tech Survival Guide (p. 83): Lastly, our special Survival Guide will help you survive 35 different situations that are likely to arise at some point in your business. We have a guide for everything from surviving a maternity leave to surviving after a natural disaster. In addition, the advertisements in this section follow the same format, bringing you mini survival guides from 23 of the top industry manufacturers. Check out the info in this book, and make sure to hold onto it all year as a valued reference tool. After reading it I hope you'll all be singing, "I Will Survive." OK, maybe that was too much!
