92 | NAILS MAGAZINE | 2016-2017 THE BIG BOOK HOW TO DO EVERYTHING BETTER GUIDE: ... EVEN BETTER retailers, lash artists, estheticians, and other beauty professionals to show potential clients all that's possible with these services. 2. Maximize your space. Work with the space you have and rearrange manicure tables and supply extra seats to accommodate models and guests. Use the far corner of your salon as a backdrop for photos. 3. Make the nails relevant. Runway nails like those shown at NYFW, aren't meant for everyday wear. Have wearable versions ready to offer clients after the show. 4. Do your research. You and your nail tech should be prepared to speak about the trends you are noticing as well as the techniques you use. Consult with clients to see what their lifestyle is like. 5. Extra details are every- thing. Serve cupcakes or select custom cocktails that continue the theme of the event and advertise any special services available at the fete. 6. Incentivize. Goodie bags always go a long way. Give away a mini polish, cuticle oil, and a nail menu to every attendee. Make the event even more worthwhile by doing raffle drawings. Consider giving winners gift cards to your salon, a local clothing boutique, or maybe even a free set of lashes. Raffle tickets can be sold for $1 apiece at the bar, making them easily accessible. This means that if you are spray tanning just five clients a day, and only working five days a week, you can make $45,500 per year from adding spray tanning." How to Make Your Fashion Event More Fun If you're a nail salon owner, there are certain occasions when a party is absolutely necessary. A grand opening usually sits at the top of that list. If, however, your business is located in an area where there are other nail salons, the challenge becomes throwing a different kind of celebration that will make yours stand out. Fashion presentations aren't just for the big city. Bring Fashion Week to your salon to mark any special occasion. Here's how: 1. Choose your partnerships wisely. Having perfect runway presentation means having hair, makeup, clothing, and styling in addition to flawless nails. Collaborate with local hair salons, private space and strips down to a bathing suit (or nothing), and the operator sprays tanning solution evenly onto the client's body with a pressurized spray "gun" that looks something like a blow dryer and allows for even application. The client allows the solution to dry, then goes home and waits for her beautiful golden "tan" to develop. There are many different spray tan products available from different companies, and most of the companies offer training along with purchase of their products and equipment. "The best thing about learning how to spray tan is that it is super easy to learn," says Drew Warner, public relations director for Aviva Labs. "By the end of a one-day class, you should be more than confident enough to begin charging for your spray tans." The best thing about spray tanning is the low overhead required to start. Entry into the industry can start with a very low-cost kit all the way up to an automatic spray tan unit. To get everything you need for a basic spray tanning business, including training and certification, products, and equipment, the total cost can be as little as $400-$500. "The return on investment for spray tanning is through the roof," says Warner. "The national average charge for a single spray tan is $35 or $45 if it's a rapid-tan solution.
