HEALTH}secret ingredient Disinfectant Disinfectants are used in the nail industry to destroy microorganisms on non-living surfaces, such as implements, countertops, and pedicure chairs. All disinfectants must be approved by and registered with the federal EPA and in each individual state; disinfectants are not for use on human skin or nails. So what is inside that's helping keep us safe from germs? 1 Benzalkonium chloride: One of the most common ingredients in disinfectants, benzalkonium chloride is an effective antimicrobial that works by breaking down the cell lipid layers of microorganisms. Isopropyl alcohol: Also known as rubbing alcohol, isopropyl alcohol is a terrific antiseptic because it is non-corrosive to the skin. Isopropyl alcohol is effective against a wide range of bacteria, and when it is very concentrated it can even destroy viruses such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. 3 Sodium nitrite: An inorganic compound that prevents the growth of microorganisms that cause disease, sodium nitrite is often used as a food additive for its disinfectant qualities and also for its ability to limit the lipid oxidation that leads to rancidity, extending the life of foods considerably.
