BOND IT! E-Filing With a Rubber Bit NAILS has received a lot of requests for more information on the natural nail rubber bit that Vicki Peters used in the NAILStv Troubleshooter piece we did earlier this year, www. nailsmag.com/video/rubberbit. We thought you might like to know more. The natural nail synthetic rubber bits are actually jewelry buffi ng bits. They typically come in yellow, green, and black. Yellow is the fi nest grit — so fi ne that it really does not have a use on nails. Green and black are medium and coarse grits that are so similar they both do the same job. Cuticle work is where Peters uses the natural nail bit the most. When you have tough cuticles that you feel you can't push back any more because you don't want to hurt the client or break the seal, use this bit. Peters uses them after she has prepped for a fi ll as well to get a cleaner nail plate. The rubber bits are perfect for toes too. After you do your cuticle work and see more needs to be done, the natural nail bit can fi nish it perfectly and quickly. Run the bit over all the toenails after you use it at the cuticle area for a smoother polish application. Place the fl at edge at the top of the bit right up to the cuticle and press the cuticle back as you go around and remove the dead tissue on the nail plate. Peters uses the fl at edge of the rubber bit, which is the opposite way you're taught to use a traditional metal or sanding band bit, because at that angle the metal bits and sanding bands cause rings of fi re. But it is safe if with a rubber bit if you use a very low speed and slight pressure so you do not damage the cuticle or nail. Work quickly with good control as you go around the cuticle in one full swipe. It is imperative to keep the bit's edge sharp and the tip fl at as it will wear down after each use and it should have a precise edge so you can get close to the cuticle to remove any dead skin still stuck to the nail. Re-shape the tip on a clean fi le on low speed just before you use it every time. The bit wears down quickly because it is so soft but you can get plenty of use before you actually wear it out. If your bit is coming to a cone shape just re- shape the tip. orlybeauty.com 800.275.1111 > The synthetic rubber natural nail bits can all be disinfected and re-used, and are available from: Atwood Industries, www.atwoodindustries.net, (760) 529-5968 Medicool, www.medicool.com, (310) 782-2200 > The black rubber bit Peters used in the NAILStv demo can be purchased from: Simmy Bredal-Bell, simmy@efi lecertifi cation.com, (732) 489-4898 DECEMBER 2012 | NAILS MAGAZINE | 61 AVAILABLE AT SALLY BEAUTY, SALONS, PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY SUPPLY STORES AND AUTHORIZED DISTRIBUTORS. www.nailsmag.com/fifi/23214 BONDER Unique rubberized basecoat, grips lacquer to nails for longer lasting wear.
