[TURN TO PAG YOUR E 118 FAVOR ITE PRO TO SEE DUCT S!] Editor's Note: We asked December cover artist MaeLing Parrish for some tricks and tips. Here's what she said, "I've never done velvet nails with polish. For the NAILS cover, I used a no-tack gel sealer, only curing it after the flocking was added. I took a class from nail educator Sam Biddle and that was how she taught me. You could try brush-on glue instead of polish." SALON PROFILES As a loyal reader of NAILS Magazine I was hoping you could educate me on exactly how to get my salon featured on your awesome pages? We are Hoopla in Fairway, Kan. We are a unique concept and would love to share our vision with your readers. Thank you for your consideration! Tammy Spicl Via e-mail Editor's Note: We're always looking for interesting new salons to feature in the pages of NAILS. You can e-mail your salon story and photos to Hannah.Lee@ bobit.com for consideration. Make sure to include a brief history of the salon/ owner bio and a statement about what makes your salon unique. NAIL TECH SEEKS EDUCATION I am a recent licensed cosmetologist and I love this magazine. I recently read the November 2012 issue "On Your Mind" article and I totally agree that there is a lack of affordable continuing education for nail techs. Then, as I continued to flip through the magazine, I saw "Hand & Nail Harmony Family Comes Together for Global Training" about a seminar for nail techs in Southern California. That's excellent! Those are the seminars that eager nail techs yearn for. But unfortunately, I read about it after the fact. How can we nail tech enthusiasts find out about classes and seminars before they happen? Brinna Jones San Pedro, Calif. 42 | NAILS MAGAZINE | Editor's Note: There are a few different ways you can find out about continuing education classes. First, check our online calendar: www.nailsmag.com/events/ upcoming. We try to post all of the major beauty shows there, plus manufacturers and independent educators are allowed to post their own events there, which generally makes it pretty comprehensive. If you can get to any of the major beauty shows, such as ISSE Long Beach, America's Beauty Show (Chicago), IBS Las Vegas, and Premiere Orlando, then we encourage you to do so and to take advantage of the continuing education classes that are included with your ticket. Second, visit the websites of your favorite manufacturers and sign up for any e-newsletters they have. Many times companies will e-mail out upcoming classes to their e-newsletter lists, but you have to sign up for the list to be notified. If you don't see an e-newsletter sign up, consider e-mailing them using the "contact us" page to ask how you can find out about their upcoming classes. Third, ask your local distributor or beauty supply store if they have any upcoming classes. Sometimes stores will host classes, and sometimes if enough people request a class the store may even contact a manufacturer on your behalf. BOOTH RENTER TAX QUESTION In the last year I decided I would finally use my nail license and start working in a salon. I started out as a booth renter, and am happy I did, even with little to no clientele in the beginning.
