JULY 2016 | NAILS MAGAZINE | 133 Sometimes best laid plans just don't work out. Many nail techs have seen the dark side of traveling, and have lived to tell about it. "I have had a few run-ins with TSA thinking my lamp was a bomb, and another when they thought all my powders were some form of Anthrax." Torie Bastian Crown Point, Ind. "I had a run-in with the TSA that cost me a Vegas competition and my sponsor a lot of wasted money. Once, they made me pour out all of my precious monomer I needed for a live competition. Another time they lost my luggage after they sent it to the wrong country. I hate fying and I really just have bad luck." Alecia Mounixay Wilmington, N.C. "I have only air traveled once for business. I did bring some nail supplies just in case I might need them. My monomer leaked in my bag and stunk up our hotel room. I couldn't wear lots of my clothes because they smelled like monomer so I just had to buy a bunch. We did run into some trouble coming through customs on our way back to Canada. We approached the customs desk and told the ofcer we were traveling for business. He asked if all my nail purchases were for business and I said yes. He then marked an x on my custom form and sent us on our way. I didn't think much of it at the time but then another ofcer pulled us to the area where they search the bags. Two ofcers then proceeded to interrogate me about the nature of my business and our trip. They wanted detailed information such as my business number, where we stayed, my daily workings, etc. They then said that I couldn't claim my nail products as personal on my custom form and they wanted my import form. I had no idea what that even was. We had purchased so many things that they needed us to fll out an entirely diferent form. They said that they could seize my items and fne us. Luckily, they said that, this being my frst ofence, they would let it go." Deanna White Fairview, Alberta, Canada If you're an educator or avid tradeshow goer, you're faced with the pain of traveling with nail products. Learn from some of the best in the business when it comes to packing and traveling safe. BY BETH LIVESAY WORST CASE SCENARIO #NAILTECHPROBLEMS Techs take to social media to shame the TSA and show proper packaging. Channeling my inner @fshmooney for #premiereorlando I wasn't allowed to wear them on the plane because they were considered a weapon! I hope TSA was amused by the 5 pounds of nail products I brought back from Premiere Orlando.
